| CONCEPT OF THE "FLUID CITY" There is a relationship between urbanization, information and analysis systems . The beginning of big-scale urbanization in the world converged with the beginning of writing, the invention of printing and its quick diffusion in the west corresponded to the development of urbanization after the Renaissance. Now electronic itself produces a considerable increase in quantity and quality of information and this causes the performance of another kind of "urbanization", that one of multi-media or FLUID CITY. In the concept of the Fluid City a quality lead take place on another level: physical, the Fluid City doesn't exist, it exists only as an union among people who are corporal (material) faraway, but who influence themselves mutual, exactly as if they were in a "normal" city. No defined territory is physical located, there is an immaterial net covering the planet, acting like the nervous system. In the Fluid City the physical contact quantitatively looses importance in favour of electronic contact. Through the telematic network , the relationships take importance increasing in quantity but substituting the physical relationships. The meaning of being materially close or faraway looses its importance. For the electronic distance is unimportant, without cancelling but ignoring it. We can speak about the "Fluid City" as the first result of the "electronic era". In the "Fluid City" the operator tends towards immobility and to the simultaneous presence in various places. No longer mechanical speed, but electronic presence, the physical displacement and consequently the speed are not required, the operator can work in every equipped place and also can be in touch with the remainder of the world. The metropolis is no longer necessary, it looses the exclusivity which made it inevitable up to now. Of course the physical does not loose importance inside the "Fluid City", ‘cause the landscape is in change. We are no longer in a city, but in something similar to an homogeneous expanse crossed by roads and powered by meaningful places. The homogeneous expanse is the world, the true action fields of the comtemporary operator, the roads are designations, used physically for travelling by cars, trains, airplanes, etc. The meaningful place is its favourite place, where he stays - like his house, his office or working place, leisure, etc. - roads and oasis. A NEW SOCIAL MOBILE TYPOLOGY In the last years a new social typology look shape, it is usually called "advanced tertiary or quaternary" - the services sector. The distinctive characteristic of this category is mobility . It is a need of physical displacement of the new professions, which impose world contact no longer inside the city. The typical person is absorbed by a net similar to the nervous system of which he represents a cell. It is a nervous system with its ganglious, its knots of information-shunting and he is a carrier, a conductor, diffusor and producer of information. While in a city relationship can be essentially hold with physically close persons, living in the same area - in the net-system the contacts are mainly with physically faraway people, who communicate with telematic, and meet themselves travelling. The same concept of residence has been upset, as the concept of living in one place looses its meaning, spending most of the time travelling and in different cities. |
